    Quick answer

To work out how much flooring you need, multiply each room's length by its width, add the rooms together, then add extra for cuts: about 10% for a straight lay, 15% for diagonal and 20% for herringbone or chevron. Divide the total by the square feet printed on one box and round up. A 12 × 14 ft bedroom is 168 sq ft, so with 10% extra you buy about 185 sq ft.

Five Measuring Mistakes That Leave You Short

1 Measuring wall to wall, not into doorways

Flooring runs under door jambs and into closets. Measure into each doorway and closet, or add them as their own small room.

    2 Forgetting extra for cuts

Every row ends in a cut. Diagonal and herringbone layouts mean far more cuts and more waste, which is why the calculator adds more for them.

    3 Buying from different batches

Order everything at once and keep a little spare from the same production run for future repairs, because color varies between batches.

    4 Rounding down the boxes

Always round up to the next full box. Running one box short in the middle of an install stops the job.

5 Skipping the stairs and odd shapes

Stairs are measured per step, not by area, and L-shaped rooms are easiest split into two rectangles. Add each piece as its own room.

    FAQ

    Flooring Calculator Questions

Multiply the length by the width of each room in feet, add the rooms together, then add extra for cuts: about 10% for a straight lay, 15% for diagonal and 20% for herringbone or chevron. Divide by the square feet in one box and round up to a whole box.

A common planning rule is about 10% extra for a straight lay, 15% for a diagonal layout and 20% for herringbone or chevron, because pattern layouts mean far more cuts. We confirm the exact order quantity when we measure.

Split it into two rectangles, measure each one and add them up. In the calculator, add each rectangle as its own room.

Divide the total square feet, extra for cuts included, by the square feet printed on one box, and round up to the next whole box.
