What to Do Before Your Flooring Installation Day

Large-format tile flooring ready for a new installation

The most common installation-day friction has nothing to do with the flooring itself — it's furniture, pets, and logistics nobody thought through in advance. Here's what actually helps.

Clearing the space

Rooms need to be fully cleared of furniture, rugs, and wall art before the crew arrives — we'll discuss during your quote whether furniture-moving assistance is included for your project, but the more you can clear yourself in advance, the faster the actual installation moves. Fragile or valuable items should be moved to a room that isn't part of the project, not just pushed to a corner.

Planning for pets and kids

Installation involves tools, materials, and open doors for extended stretches — it's genuinely safer and less stressful for pets to be in a closed-off room, a crate, or with a friend for the day if possible. The same goes for very young kids during the loudest parts of the work, sanding in particular if refinishing is part of the job.

Parking and access

A crew needs reasonably close parking for tools and material delivery, and clear access to the work area — if you're in a neighborhood with permit parking or a shared driveway, mentioning that during your quote lets us plan around it instead of losing time on install day.

What happens to your old flooring

Removal and disposal of existing flooring is typically included in the quote — ask specifically if it isn't clear, since this is one of the more common places a lower quote is actually missing a line item rather than being a genuinely better price. See our cost guide for more on what should and shouldn't be itemized separately.

Utilities and access the crew will need

Confirm the crew will have access to electricity and water for the day, and let us know in advance if either will be limited — some tools and finishing steps depend on both. If the project includes a room with a thermostat or HVAC vent, mention that too, since sanding and finishing dust can affect equipment if it isn't accounted for ahead of time.

What "done" actually looks like

A completed job includes a full walkthrough with you before the crew leaves — this is when to point out anything that doesn't look right, ask care questions, and get a realistic sense of when it's safe to move furniture back in, which varies by material since freshly finished hardwood needs longer than LVP or tile before furniture returns.

The short version

Clear the space, plan for pets and kids, mention any parking constraints when you book, and ask what's included in removal and disposal. Book your free in-home quote and we'll walk you through exactly what to expect for your specific project before a single tool comes out.
