Rumson was a summer colony for New York industrialists and bankers long before it was a commuter town. It was settled in 1665 and incorporated as a borough in 1907, and the estates built during its resort era were designed by architects of national standing — Stanford White, Bruce Price and Thomas Hastings among them. Rohallion, built in 1887 for a descendant of John Adams, is one of the surviving examples.
