About This Service

A retail or lobby staircase and an exit stairwell are two different jobs wearing the same name. A front-of-house stair can usually match the surrounding hardwood or LVT; an exit stairwell or back-of-house stair typically needs a slip-resistant, contrast-marked nosing to meet applicable code and insurance requirements — and it takes far more daily traffic than the lobby ever will.

We price stairs per tread rather than estimating the whole flight, because tread count and condition (existing damage, riser repair, out-of-level nosing) genuinely change the labor — and a per-tread number is easier for you to reconcile against a bid form or budget line.

FAQ

Commercial Stair Treads & Nosing Questions, Answered

Many jurisdictions and insurance carriers require slip-resistant and visually contrasting nosing on commercial stairwells, especially exit stairs. We'll flag what applies to your building during the site walk rather than assume.

Yes — for front-of-house stairs we bring samples on-site to match species, stain color and finish sheen to the adjoining hardwood or LVT before any work begins.

It depends on tread count and whether it's a full refinish or tread replacement, but most single-flight commercial stairwells are workable again within 1–3 days. We give an exact number as part of the per-tread bid.
