Flooring and adhesive manufacturers specify the moisture test and the limits their products need, and the National Wood Flooring Association's installation guidelines say testing to that specification is the only way to identify whether a slab's moisture level is adequate, and that documenting the result is part of meeting the flooring manufacturer's warranty requirements. We run ASTM F2170 relative humidity (RH) probe testing as standard on commercial slab installs, with calcium chloride testing available where a spec calls for it specifically.
When a slab reads outside the flooring manufacturer's tolerance, we install a moisture mitigation system or self-leveling underlayment rated for the reading — not a guess at "should be fine." ASTM F2170 relative humidity testing measures the relative humidity inside a concrete slab rather than at its surface, and the NWFA installation guidelines say it predicts the equalized humidity through the slab once flooring covers it.
